About
ARTIST STATEMENT
Kate Crumpler works in performance, sculpture and painting. Her monumental sculptures and vulnerable performances are simultaneously bold, theatrical and sensitive. These works attempt to make the unseen, not just seen, but substantial: bringing something of the invisible spiritual realm into dramatic material form, and into the forefront of our perception. The scale and audacity of these works create a certain awe as they take up room and speak loudly of things we struggle to articulate.
The idea of unconditional love drives Kate’s work, along with the quest to understand psychological states and emotions that are overlooked. The monumental sculptures exaggerate psychological states in an attempt to understand emotions more deeply. The works are often inspired by encounters with people, and the emotions they trigger become the material for the artworks. There is a desire in the work to acknowledge the beauty in the brokenness.
Kate’s work is raw, physical and theatrical because of a longing to captivate the soul and make deep connections with people through art. These sculptures stretch materials to their limits and utilise a range of substances including willow, fabric, mud, foam, rubber, paint and plastic. These tactile materials invite the viewer to engage with and touch them, with the aim of provoking the unconscious.
